SAP Launches Autonomous Enterprise: Joule Work Goes GA for 400M Users
At SAP Connect in Las Vegas this week, SAP CEO Christian Klein closed his keynote with a declaration that captured the shift: “This is no longer the start of something better. This is better.” With that, SAP formally launched Joule Work for all 400 million-plus SAP customers and confirmed the general availability of SAP AI Agent Hub, completing the rollout of what it calls the Autonomous Enterprise.
For enterprise AI builders and GTM teams, the timing matters. SAP runs the core business workflows of a majority of Fortune 500 companies. When SAP ships AI agents into finance, procurement, supply chain, HR, and customer experience at scale, it changes how enterprise AI gets built, governed, and measured across every industry it touches.
Three Layers, One Autonomous Enterprise
SAP organized its SAP Connect 2026 announcements around a three-layer architecture that it first outlined at SAP Sapphire in May:
Layer 1: Joule Work. The new universal AI interface for all SAP users. It launches to all customers this month, replacing SAP’s fragmented application UIs with a single natural-language prompt window that plans tasks, delegates to agents, and writes results back into existing SAP and third-party workflows. Klein described it as “a new UI for AI,” noting that for decades, users had to learn how SAP worked. “From now on, the more than 400 million SAP users can talk in their own language to SAP, and Joule Work gets the job done.”
Layer 2: SAP Autonomous Suite. A library of pre-built Joule Assistants and Joule Agents covering five domains: finance, procurement, supply chain, human resources, and customer experience. SAP now has 20-plus Joule Assistants and 200-plus Joule Agents deployed, with a target of 400-plus agents by year-end.
Layer 3: SAP Business AI Platform (BAIP). The governance, context, and model layer beneath the other two. It unifies SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Business Data Cloud, includes the SAP Knowledge Graph, Joule Studio for building custom agents, and SAP AI Agent Hub for governing them. BAIP supports 70-plus AI models.
| Layer | Component | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | Joule Work | GA: October 2026 |
| Agents | SAP Autonomous Suite (200-plus Joule Agents) | Rolling out across 5 domains |
| Foundation | SAP Business AI Platform | GA at SAP Connect 2026 |
| Governance | SAP AI Agent Hub | Now generally available |
| Data | SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP Reltio | GA |
| Builder | Joule Studio | Generally available |
The Knowledge Graph: Context as Competitive Moat
The sharpest theme at SAP Connect was the contrast between SAP’s embedded, context-rich agents and generic LLMs from frontier providers. Klein drew the line clearly at the press Q&A:
“Coding features is different than building an ontology. When you talk about 7 million fields and half a million tables, that needs to find its way into an ontology. That’s what we are pushing. That’s why now Joule Work can solve things. We can also get tasks done which others can’t do.”
The SAP Knowledge Graph maps more than 7 million data fields, 500,000-plus tables, 50,000-plus public and private APIs, and 400 data products. Every agent built on Joule Studio draws on this context by default. The result: agents that know which process to invoke, which data to pull, and which governance rules apply, without requiring custom prompt engineering.
Joule Studio supports a no-code-to-pro-code spectrum on a single platform, includes 11,800-plus pre-built business accelerators, and is benchmarked by Constellation Research as more than 5 times faster than DIY agent development. Agents built in Joule Studio inherit SAP’s security model automatically.
Also generally available is SAP Reltio inside SAP Business Data Cloud, providing a single trusted view of customers, suppliers, products, and employees across SAP and non-SAP systems. Manoj Swaminathan, President and Chief Product Officer of SAP Autonomous Suite, summarized the context advantage: “So, the agents you build are more accurate, faster to deploy, and more efficient to run. Our knowledge graph is the map with the processes, data flows, and business tools.”
Customer Evidence: Production Outcomes at Enterprise Scale
SAP shared concrete outcome data from early adopters:
Reinhausen (industrial equipment powering about half the world’s electrical grid, growing at 20% per year): Work that previously required up to an hour of manual effort across SAP S/4HANA is now accessible in seconds through natural language. Director of Complexity Management Peter Wied said the Joule Work early adopter program “delivered more momentum in just a few months than we saw in all the years before.”
KNAPP (warehouse automation): Used Joule Studio to build a floor-worker assistant for identifying and resolving problems in real time. Issue resolution times dropped by approximately 90%, and documentation and training times fell by approximately 80%.
SAP internally: 110,000 SAP employees use Joule every day. SAP reports 20-plus percent productivity gains in finance, HR, and procurement, with larger gains in complex analytical and planning tasks.
On stage at SAP Connect, customers including Novartis (sourcing agent workflows for bid analysis), Morgan Foods (supply-chain planning), Nestlé (ERP data unification), and PwC (industry AI co-innovation) validated the approach from their own production environments.
BCG research, cited in SAP’s announcement, found that companies leading in AI scaling deliver 2.4 times the revenue growth and 2.8 times the EBITDA growth of companies falling behind. A Deloitte survey of 500-plus enterprise leaders, also referenced by SAP, found that 74% said they would redesign or rebuild almost half their business processes around AI agents.
Governance as Infrastructure: SAP AI Agent Hub
SAP Chief Security Officer Marielle Ehrmann devoted a key section of the keynote to the governance gap that underlies much of enterprise AI’s slow adoption. The headline statistic: 83% of enterprises use AI daily, but only 13% have real visibility into it. “The biggest threat to companies is not malicious AI; it’s unmanaged AI,” Ehrmann said. Her team also reported that ransomware incident handovers that once took eight hours now take 22 seconds with AI, illustrating both the power and the risk surface of agentic systems.
SAP AI Agent Hub, now generally available, lets organizations govern every agent, LLM, and MCP server across both SAP and third-party environments. It includes SAP Signavio Agent Mining to measure outcomes and surface optimization opportunities.
Ehrmann described a three-tier human oversight model:
- Human-in-the-loop: Agent actions require explicit approval before execution.
- Human-on-the-loop: Agents act autonomously, with monitoring and exception escalation.
- Human-in-command: Override authority at any time, required for high-risk scenarios.
“The more autonomously an agent operates, the tighter the oversight applied,” she said, calling the principle “freedom within boundaries.” SAP Business AI Platform incorporates EU AI Act alignment, localization requirements for operations in 60-plus countries, zero customer data used to train foundation models, and ISO 42001 certification.
This governance architecture is directly relevant to enterprise teams evaluating multi-agent deployments, particularly in regulated industries. It sits at the same layer as the agentic control plane investments that have attracted significant enterprise vendor attention throughout 2026.
New Additions: SAP Pay and TechWolf
Two announcements beyond the core agent story extended the Autonomous Enterprise footprint:
SAP Pay: A new embedded payments service that automatically executes and reconciles supplier payments once an invoice is approved. It removes the need for a separate payment integration in SAP Autonomous Suite financial workflows.
TechWolf acquisition (intent): SAP announced plans to acquire TechWolf, a Belgian workforce intelligence startup that built a context graph decomposing job roles into task sets and mapping them to employee skills. Rebecca Carr, SAP President of HCM Products, said the technology will be embedded natively into SAP SuccessFactors, providing workforce redeployment and reskilling intelligence directly in the flow of work for all SAP HCM customers.
Both moves extend the Autonomous Enterprise into financial settlement and workforce orchestration, areas where AI automation previously depended on third-party point solutions with limited native SAP data context.
What Enterprise AI Teams Should Take From This
SAP’s launch reinforces three patterns relevant to any enterprise AI strategy:
Context beats capability for enterprise deployment. The Knowledge Graph advantage Klein describes is not unique to SAP. Every enterprise that succeeds with AI agents at scale will need this layer: a structured, authoritative representation of its own processes, data, and rules. This is why operational intelligence platforms and agent context layers have become a distinct investment category in 2026.
Governance is now table stakes, not a differentiator. The AI Agent Hub’s GA release signals that audit trails, scoped permissions, and human override controls are expected infrastructure, not premium features. Enterprise teams evaluating agent platforms without these controls are building technical debt.
400 million users changes adoption math. SAP’s Joule Work rollout does not require companies to purchase a new platform or run a pilot. It arrives as a UI layer on top of production systems. That distribution advantage accelerates enterprise AI penetration in SAP-heavy industries, finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail, far faster than greenfield AI platforms can.
For enterprise GTM and operations teams assessing how AI agent capabilities map to existing tech stacks, the SAP Autonomous Enterprise launch is a forcing function. The question is no longer whether AI agents will enter the ERP layer. They already have.
